Editing images with Nano Banana: start from a reference

Oct 17, 2026Nano BananaNano Banana

Upload a reference, say what to change, pick the best result. Edit images with Nano Banana 2.1 in three steps, with prompt tips.

Nano Banana does more than text to image. Give it one or more reference images and a sentence about what to change, and it can swap backgrounds, restyle, fix details or combine elements from several pictures.

Step 1: upload references

On the create page, choose Nano Banana 2.1 and click the "Reference images" button to upload. JPEG, PNG and WebP are supported, up to 10 MB each. Nano Banana 2.1 takes up to 14 references, so you can give it the person, the product and the scene separately.

As soon as you add a reference, the run switches from text to image to image editing on its own.

Step 2: say what to keep and what to change

Good edit prompts state what stays and what changes:

  • "Keep the person's face and outfit, move them to a Tokyo street after rain at night, with neon reflections"
  • "Turn this product photo into a white-background store image with soft top light; keep the label text on the bottle"
  • "Use the person from the first image and the jacket from the second for a full-body shot"

With several references, describe what each one is for, in order, as in the last example.

Step 3: make a few, keep the best

You can make up to 4 outputs at once, and the button shows the credit cost before you start. Failed outputs refund their credits automatically. Results are saved to My Works, where you can download them or click "Generate again" to keep refining with the same prompt and references.

Tips

  • Pick the aspect ratio and resolution before generating; it beats cropping afterwards.
  • Change one or two things at a time for more predictable results. For big changes, generate once and use the result as the next reference.
